Setting the tone.

In a recent TD session we asked teachers what they do in terms of setting the tone for the class. We asked them to think about things like attendance, lateness, behaviour, mobile phones. This is what came up:

We also discussed whether having a stricter lateness policy would be useful/practical/appropriate. There were teachers on different sides of this issue. There are three possibilities, as far as I see it, for a policy regarding lateness:

a) Students should aim to be on time every day, but if they are late they can join class at any time.

b) Students must be on time. If they are late they must wait until after the break to join class.

c) Students who are late may not be allowed into class, this is at the teacher’s discretion.

At the moment, we’re using a. I’m a fan of c, as it allows teachers flexibility and as long as you explain your position to the class at the begninning of each course, I don’t have any problem with it.

Which policy do you think would work best?

And what, if anything, do you do in terms of setting the tone?
